First came the artists, then the musicians, then the enterprising new chefs, and just like that, Philly?s low-key working-class neighborhood of Fishtown (so-called because of its history as the center of the shad fishing industry) evolved into the city?s latest hub of cool. The focus of this area?s renaissance? Fishtown Restaurants have really good food (and drinks too).

Like Brooklyn?s Williamsburg did five years ago, under-the-radar Fishtown has become home to nationally acclaimed restaurants (including a pizzeria deemed the best in the country by Bon App?tit) and lively bars. Here, a field guide to the very best spots to eat and drink in Philly?s coolest new hood.

When all the burgers and beers start to feel a little too heavy for you, head to this airy caf? and stake out a spot on the sunny back patio. Here you can choose from a selection of healthy juices and smoothies and virtuous takes on classic comfort food (think vegan tacos and Mexican-inspired grain bowls).

On the corner of Front and Thompson Streets stands a beautiful, brick building, left over from the 1800s.?The building (found at 1253 N. Front St.) is just? one block north of the SEPTA Girard Avenue Station. It?s location is a convenient stop for commuters along the corridor.

From dawn to dusk, the caf? ?features brunch from 8AM through mid-afternoon, with dinner menu coming in from 5 to 10PM. Lots of healthy, avant-garde choices are?available all day, with choices like wild rice collard dolmas with citrus hemp dressing; avocado citrus salad with organic baby kale, avocado, mango, radish greens, hemp, pumpkin seeds, and citrus jalapeno dressing; zucchini lasagna; and organic rotisserie half-chicken.

Unusual for most Fishtown Restaurants there is also a full bar serving craft beer, organic wines and cocktails, while commuters on the health train can order smoothies and juices from the juice bar to go. ? Front Street Cafe is one of the best new restaurants in Philadelphia’s Fishtown neighborhood.
