Front Street Cafe starts First Friday Art Gallery Openings

Fishtown’s Front Street Cafe starts their First Friday art Gallery openings this Friday February 5th 2016 in the upstairs second floor gallery space.

This month Front Street Cafe is excited to be showcasing the Artwork of local Fishtown artist Kimberlee Traub on the second floor of the Cafe. Her work is exciting, brilliant and powerful and we are honored to be working with her.


~ Please join us in a show as Kimberlee reflects back on the art she has created in Philadelphia over the past decade. Art on view will include pieces recently shown at various PEX events. Many of the drawings have been inspired by the local Burning Man community. Merchandise such as candles and jewelry featuring her work will be for sale opening night.

Front Street Flea at Front Street Cafe on Sunday 1/31/2016

Our new monthly “Front Street Flea” starting this Sunday at Front Street Cafe from 4-8pm, will feature custom hand made jewelry, vintage goods, handmade soaps, sculptures, clothing, accessories and art of all kinds. This month Artisans include Tin Goat, Concrete Polish/Ritual Ritual, Red Pine Shop, Hedy Sirico & Monk E Burnswell, Retro Relics, Nue Organics, Sue White, Jessica Koob, Oracular Design and more! Front Street Cafe helping to revitalize Fishtown

The Front Street Café, a vibrant new eatery opened last year on the corner of Thompson and Front streets, is the latest on a growing list of restaurants revitalizing the Fishtown neighborhood of Philadelphia.

Drawing inspiration from the unique character of the neighborhood, the creators of the Front Street Café aspire to do more than serve great food. From its inception, the restaurant has been designed to nourish this growing community, satisfying both body and spirit from sun up to lights out.

Long-time Fishtown resident Nicole Barclay, was driven by a strong sense of place and purpose to create a restaurant built around fresh, sustainable ingredients, with ample choices for people who have dietary preferences for health or lifestyle reasons.

A juice bar and coffee shop will open early to serve morning commuters, offering freshly made juices, smoothies, coffee from Counter Culture Coffee, as well as grab- and-go breakfasts and lunches, just one block away from Girard Station.

Casual brunch service will begin early and run through mid-afternoon seven days a week, with a menu offering sandwiches, salads, burgers … and breakfast tacos with more than 18 topping choices, including heirloom tomatoes, organic baby kale, mushroom bacon, avocado and nacho cashew cheese. All of the ingredients down to the condiments are made in-house or sourced organically and sustainably. Free WiFi is offered in a comfortable second-floor community space overlooking the El, while a backyard garden retreat has table seating for 80.

A full bar will serve creative cocktails made with freshly squeezed juices and local ingredients, an array of craft beers drawing from both local and west-coast breweries, and a selection of organic and biodynamic wines designed to match the menu and pair well with artisanal cheese selections sourced from creameries across the U.S.

The dinner menu puts a fresh spin on comfort food, including:

  • Wild Rice Collard Dolmas: with citrus hemp dressing.
  • Avocado Citrus Salad: Organic baby kale, avocado, mango, radish greens, hemp, pumpkin seeds, citrus jalapeno dressing
  • Mediterranean Tofu: Pan-seared fennel, sage, chili-rubbed tofu, wilted garlic kale, fresh tomato marinara, salt-cured olives and crispy capers
  • Heirloom Tomato Zucchini Lasagna: Thinly sliced zucchini, Macadamia ricotta, basil-arugula pesto, sundried tomato, olive oil
  • Organic Rotisserie Half Chicken: Orange-brined chicken, roasted baby potatoes, stewed collard greens, chicken jus, house-made biscuits

“We really want to have a neighborhood café where people can eat many times a week, and instead of weighing them down, it actually makes them healthier,” Nicole said.


The space Front Street Café will occupy is one of the few 19th-century brick buildings to survive along the Front Street train corridor. During design and construction, building owner and builder Lee Larkin retained all of the original architectural details, including an intricate 3rd story tin cornice and Schuylkill Pine hardwood floors. Almost all of the additional building components where sourced and reclaimed from old Philadelphia buildings. Steps were built from joists taken from a home being demolished at Temple University, while wooden beams for the outside bar came from a warehouse at 25th and Oxford. A display cabinet on the second floor pays homage to the history of Fishtown and the Riverwards by showcasing hundreds of pre-Civil War artifacts that were discovered under the property during construction.

“Everything in this place has a story to tell,” Lee said. “And the story of this restaurant is tied to the story of this neighborhood – refreshed, revitalized and bursting with energy.”

As Fishtown’s development progressed, moving west into Kensington, Lee Larkin and Nicole Barclay were watching.

He owned a grand, 19th-century building on the southeast corner of Front and Thompson Streets, a block north of the Girard Street El stop. And as the influx of new residents reached a critical mass, they began developing what they imagined to be “what the neighborhood needed”:

A cafe serving organics and sustainably raised foods, catering both to omnivores as well as to vegetarians and the lactose-intolerant and gluten-free crowds. And while the mission of Front Street Cafe is clear and respectable, it appears they have avoided much of the preachiness that has a way of turning off mainstream audiences.

Front Street Cafe (1253 N. Front St., 215-515-3073) opened in stages this fall, and now that dinner service has been added, it’s gotten around to marking its grand opening.

This roomy spot has it all: a coffee/pastry counter opening at 6 a.m. weekdays (7 a.m. weekends) for locals who need a cup and even a quiet table, breakfast starting at 8 a.m., lunch and dinner that is served on two floors, a moderately hopping bar that is open past midnight six days a week, a patio/garden set out back in the nicer weather – and for no additional charge, the rhythmic chug-chug of the El as it rumbles past at the building’s roof line.

Larkin says they’re experimenting with live music upstairs one or two nights a week.

About 90 percent of the building materials were reclaimed, recycled, or repurposed: the Schuylkill pine floors and third-story cornice remain, old wooden doors cover the bottom of the bar, benches from the bar come from a shuttered restaurant, steps were built from joists taken from a home being demolished at Temple University, tin was cut and pieced together to create a ceiling, reclaimed brick was used on exterior walls. The irrigation system was set up to funnel rainwater to the plantings.

Chef Andrew Petruzelli, who helped write the menu, is general manager.

About 85 percent of the menu – executed by chef Chris Rubinstein – is vegan/plant-based, and produce is purchased from the local distributor Riverwards Produce. Organic chicken, free-range grass-fed beef, and sustainably harvested seafood are offered.

Two lunch recommendations: the vegan burger (a mildly seasoned quinoa base, studded with mushrooms) and the buttermilk fried chicken sandwich (with mustard maple aioli, pickles, applewood bacon, butter lettuce, and tomato jam on a toasted brioche bun), served with a Hasselback-style, spiral-cut oven-fried potato that’s a conversation-starter in itself.

The recently opened Front Street Cafe represents one of Philadelphia’s best new trends, the all-day cafe. In the morning the vegan-friendly cafe offers quinoa porridge, breakfast tacos of the vegan or sausage variety, and an interesting take on shrimp and grits. And since the cafe has a liquor license, a Bloody Mary or Maria (with tequila) is a must.
An eater’s tip: In nice weather, the enclosed outdoor garden and bar is the place to dine.
